Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?

I have chosen the profession of barrister due to its complex and challenging nature. I also liked this profession is stimulating and requires critical thinking and analytical skills. Being a law practitioner entails being mastering the art of advocacy as well as being good at research. I particularly like exploring the depths of a case, delving into the case law and statutes before developing well-reasoned arguments or legal advice. I also enjoy interacting with clients and trying to come up with the best solution to resolve their issues.

What did you enjoy most about your programme and what was the biggest highlight?

My programme is a double law degree which gave me the golden opportunity to study the law of two jurisdictions ( English law and French law) and to spend a year abroad in France.  My programme was challenging as I studied French law alongside English law and I constantly had to switch between two languages ( English and French). These legal systems of these two jurisdictions are based on different legal concepts. Nevertheless, it was a rewarding experience. I also enjoyed the lectures delivered by Dr Rolland. I am very appreciative of him for his constant guidance and support throughout my academic journey. The biggest highlight is that this programme is one of its kind . It is suitable for individuals like me who come from a country with a hybrid legal system and who has to master both Common Law and Civil Law to be able to practise in my home country (Mauritius)

What did you enjoy most about studying here?

The campus is well-developed with top notch infrastructures. The environment is extremely pleasant. The greenery as well as the occasional squirrels provide a very relaxing and perfect environment for studying, away from the hustle-bustle of metropolitan cities. The flexible opening hours of the library is a big advantage for students.  I was also delighted to be a part of the pro bono programmes provided by the Exeter Community Law Clinic.

Why did you choose to study at Exeter?

I chose to study at the University of Exeter because its law school has designed a very interesting programme- the LLB in English and French law/ Master1 (maitrise), which the opportunity to study a ‘maitrise’ in France in the fourth year. The University of Exeter forms part of the Russell Group Universities and this factor has also positively influenced my choice.

What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?

Keep up to date with the recent legal developments  Gain practical experience before embarking on a career path.

What are your plans for the future?

I aspire to become a corporate lawyer who specialises in international commercial arbitration.
