What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?

I went travelling in Central Asia for a few months, before returning to the UK to start a PhD in Automated Cancer Diagnosis via Artificial Intelligence at Cardiff University

Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?

I fell in love with Research during my MSci degree at Exeter. I was really lucky to find a generously funded PhD position which is now allowing me to get paid to undertake research. I love that every day is something new, I’m always learning, and I get to be my own boss!

Please tell us if you were a member of any societies, groups or sports clubs?

I was a member of the Natural Sciences Society, including being a committee member for 2 of the years I was there.

What did you enjoy most about your programme and what was the biggest highlight?

The community and the flexibility. We were a tight knit bunch, and we had the option of picking almost any module across the university in our later years of study. My biggest highlight was being a member of senior Student Representation and really getting involved in making the course better for everyone in it.

What did you most enjoy about studying here?

The campus environment – I really loved the buzz of being on site, and the location really is beautiful.

Why did you choose to study at Exeter?

The course, mainly. It was by far the most flexible and appealing Natural Sciences course I could find when I applied to the UK.

What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?

Undertaking extended group projects which have produced tangible deliverables. This is such a good way to show that you have the skills needed to deliver in a job environment.

What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?

Getting a PhD position is all about showing that you’re passionate and that you’re capable. Start a research portfolio, show-off your skills and really get involved in the learning process. Make sure you speak to many supervisors, and find the right fit.

What are your plans for the future?

Pursue my PhD, and then hopefully start a business in the medical tech field!
