What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?

Since graduating from Exeter, I have gained valuable experience working at Gowling WLG LLP in Waterloo and the Centre for International Governance Innovation. My specialization includes corporate law, privacy, technology, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance.

On a personal note, I am happily married and a proud mother to a beautiful baby boy. Our family is completed by our two adorable Cavalier Spaniels. In addition to my professional work, I volunteer with my local law society and am an active advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?

From a young age, I’ve been driven by a strong sense of justice and a desire to make a positive impact on society. The legal profession offers a unique platform to advocate for individuals, uphold the rule of law, and contribute to the development of a fair and equitable society. My passion for critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication naturally led me to pursue a career in law. Additionally, I am inspired by the opportunity to advocate for those in need, whether it’s defending the rights of the vulnerable, navigating complex legal systems, or influencing policy changes. Being a lawyer allows me to combine my skills and passions to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others and the broader community.

What I love most about being an in-house lawyer is the opportunity to be deeply integrated within a single organization, allowing me to develop a comprehensive understanding of its business operations, culture, and strategic goals. This unique position enables me to provide tailored legal advice that aligns with the company’s objectives and proactively address potential legal issues before they arise. I enjoy the collaborative nature of the role, working closely with various departments to support their initiatives and ensure compliance with regulations. Being an in-house lawyer also allows me to witness the direct impact of my work on the organization’s success and growth, which is incredibly rewarding. The variety of legal challenges I encounter keeps the work dynamic and intellectually stimulating, making each day both exciting and fulfilling.

Please tell us if you were a member of any societies, groups or sports clubs?

While at Exeter, I was a member of the Welcome Team and then a Welcome Team leader. I also participated in the dog walking society and the Canadian Law Students Society.

What did you enjoy most about your programme and what was the biggest highlight?

What I enjoyed most about my programme was the unparalleled support and resources available, which far exceeded my experience at my Canadian university. The structure of the workshops, recorded lectures, and the additional programmes and events on offer created an enriching and supportive learning environment. The faculty members were incredibly supportive, providing personalized guidance and fostering a collaborative atmosphere that significantly enhanced my learning experience. The recorded lectures gave me the opportunity to rewatch difficult concepts to ensure I understood the material and could digest it multiple times, if needed.

The biggest highlight for me was participating in the judicial shadowing scheme. This experience allowed me to observe barristers and judges in action, providing invaluable insights into the practical application of the law and its impact on individuals. Seeing the legal process up close and understanding the human element involved was profoundly inspiring and reinforced my passion for the legal profession.

What did you enjoy most about studying here?

As an international student, what I cherished most were the incredible people I met. I formed lifelong friendships at Exeter and developed a deep appreciation for the campus, the city, and my programme. I look back on my time at Exeter with great fondness and pride.

Why did you choose to study at Exeter?

I chose to study at Exeter because of its prestigious international rankings, exceptional student experience, comprehensive support services, and vibrant campus culture. Despite the challenging climb of hills, the beautiful gardens and scenic landscapes provided a picturesque backdrop for both learning and living.

Exeter Law School, in particular, stood out with its impressive faculty and an inspiring, supportive learning environment. I wholeheartedly recommend Exeter Law School to anyone who will listen.

I thoroughly enjoyed the variety of modules available during my final year, which allowed me to explore areas of law that I was genuinely interested in. In particular, I loved working in the Exeter Community Law Clinic as part of the Access to Justice module, as I was able to use the knowledge and skills I had acquired to provide free advice to real people facing a wide range of legal issues. I found this experience to be both rewarding and extremely beneficial for my professional development.
