What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?
Since leaving Exeter, I initially pursued a career in law, working as a paralegal while preparing for a ski season. However, I soon realised that my interests lay more in business and finance. Alongside a role as a project associate, I completed a master’s in business, which solidified my decision to transition into management consulting, where I am now continuing to grow my career.
Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?
I chose a career in management consulting because I have always enjoyed strategic problem-solving and working with others to make sense of complex challenges. What drew me in was the chance to think big, to help shape the direction of a business whilst also collaborating closely with teams to bring those ideas to life. What I enjoy most is the mix of strategy, variety, and teamwork. Every project is different, and I get to learn from a variety of people while contributing to work that has real impact.
What did you enjoy most about your programme and what was the biggest highlight?
What I enjoyed most about my LLB Law programme was the variety of topics we studied, from criminal to commercial law, many of which felt highly relevant to real-world issues and current events. It was intellectually challenging in the best way, constantly pushing me to think critically and develop strong analytical and communication skills that I still use today. A major highlight for me was getting involved in pro bono work, where I had the chance to apply what I was learning in a practical setting and make a real difference in people’s lives.
What did you most enjoy about studying here?
What I enjoyed most about studying at Exeter was the variety of topics we got to explore — it really kept things interesting and helped me discover what areas I was most passionate about. I also appreciated the mix of theory and practical learning, which made everything feel more real and relevant. But what really stood out was the enthusiasm of the lecturers; their passion for the subject made classes genuinely enjoyable and created a really motivating environment.
Why did you choose to study at Exeter?
I chose Exeter because it felt like the perfect fit for me! A beautiful campus right in the countryside but not far from a city, so I could enjoy the best of both worlds. I really liked the idea of being part of a close-knit campus community where everything’s nearby. Plus, Exeter has a great law school, which was a big draw. On top of that, I was excited about all the societies and sport I could get involved in outside of class, it just felt like a place where I could really grow both academically and personally.
What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?
Coming from a law background, I found that skills like critical thinking, problem solving, thinking outside the box and attention to detail have been really useful in my consulting work. Law taught me how to break down complex problems and communicate my ideas clearly, which is essential when working with clients within the strategic management consulting space. Beyond that, the variety of projects I have worked on has helped me become adaptable and solution-focused. Combining that with my business studies and consulting experience, I feel well-equipped to tackle different challenges and help businesses find the best way forward.
What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?
My biggest advice would be not to rush into choosing one specific career too early (I made that mistake myself.) It really is true that when you pursue what genuinely interests you, work doesn’t feel like a job. I would suggest figuring out your top three skills or passions and then exploring areas within consulting that align with them. Also, make good use of your university’s alumni network, I gained some of my best work experience through those connections. I have also reached out to people on LinkedIn and asked for their advice/ potential work experience.
It’s important to know your ‘why’, why you’re interested in a certain field or role as that clarity will help guide your decisions. Finding a firm or company that fits your values and style is crucial because work is about more than just the tasks you do; it’s about the environment and culture you thrive in. Consulting, in particular, welcomes people from all backgrounds and offers lots of opportunities to blend your interests with business. So keep an open mind, explore widely, and find what feels right for you.
What are your plans for the future?
In the near future, I plan to continue developing my career within consulting, ideally staying with a firm where I can build deeper expertise. Down the line, I’d like to move in-house, possibly within a law firm’s internal consulting team, to blend my interests in both law and consulting. Ultimately, I have a strong passion for teaching and helping others grow, so becoming a lecturer is something I hope to pursue eventually. My current role offers exciting opportunities to work and travel abroad with international clients at the moment, so I’m definitely looking forward to more of that!
