What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?

Foundation Doctor Training.

Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?

I chose to be a doctor with an aim to become a Neurosurgeon as I am fascinated by the brain, by people and the skills required to fix the brains of those people from devastating pathologies such as brain tumours. I am doing my current rotation in Neurosurgery and I’m just so happy that I’m getting that taste of my dream job and it’s such a bonus that I get paid for doing it. I enjoy being the one that gets called to do ward based procedures such as lumbar punctures and taking out drains from people’s brains. Then I’m super lucky when I get a chance to assist in the operating theatre. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

Please tell us if you were a member of any societies, groups or sports clubs?

I was part of Surgical Society, Neuro Society, and First Aid Society.

What did you enjoy most about your programme and what was the biggest highlight?

My surgical placements. I got an opportunity to present some research at a Neurosurgical conference in Colombia, that would be my highlight, although the University weren’t originally going to let me go!

What did you most enjoy about studying here?

The friends I made and the Panto in Truro.

Why did you choose to study at Exeter?

I liked the area and I got in.

What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?

Exeter prepared us extremely well for portfolio work in foundation training. Communication skills were drilled in early on and I can’t say that hasn’t been useful, a lot of things can be de-escalated with good communication.

What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?

Enjoy it, ensure you have hobbies outside of medicine, and look after yourself first because you have to be mentally and physically well before you can expect to heal your patients.

What are your plans for the future?

I’m applying for Neurosurgery ST1.
