What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?
Since leaving Exeter University, I have been working as a paralegal in the Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence department at Coodes Solicitors. This role has provided me with invaluable experience and insight into the legal field, allowing me to hone my skills and deepen my passion for law. I’m excited to be starting my solicitor apprenticeship with the firm in March 2026, where I will continue to grow and develop as a legal professional. One of the most rewarding aspects of my journey so far has been discovering how much I love working in Cornwall. The unique blend of professional opportunity and the beautiful, supportive community here has made it the perfect place to launch my legal career.
Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?
I chose this career because I’ve always been passionate about helping others and seeking justice for those who need it most. Working as a paralegal in the Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence department has reinforced my decision, as it allows me to make a real difference in people’s lives. I find the contentious nature of the role particularly engaging—no two cases are ever the same, and every day brings new challenges. What I enjoy most is being able to support people during their most vulnerable moments, offering them the help they need when navigating complex legal matters. It’s incredibly rewarding to advocate for those who have suffered and help them achieve the justice they deserve. The variety and impact of the work continue to inspire me and drive my passion for this field.
What did you enjoy most about your programme and what was the biggest highlight?
The most enjoyable aspect of my LLB Law with Business degree was how hands-on the course was. I had the opportunity to take part in numerous mock advocacy events and negotiations, which were invaluable in developing practical skills. These experiences allowed me to step into the shoes of a lawyer, refining my ability to think on my feet, negotiate effectively, and advocate persuasively. It was through these interactive exercises that I truly learned the real skills necessary for a successful legal career. The biggest highlight was the feeling I got after taking part in the mock trials, It was a thrilling experience to step into the role of a lawyer and feel the adrenaline of being in the courtroom, even if it was just a simulation.
What did you most enjoy about studying here?
What I enjoyed most about studying at Exeter’s Penryn campus was the close-knit and supportive community. The campus provided a perfect balance of academic rigor and a relaxed, welcoming environment. The smaller, more intimate setting meant I could build strong relationships with both my professors and fellow students, which made learning more engaging and personal. Additionally, being surrounded by Cornwall’s natural beauty added to the overall experience, offering a peaceful and inspiring backdrop for my studies. It really felt like a place where I could thrive both academically and personally.
Why did you choose to study at Exeter?
I chose to study at Exeter University because of its strong reputation and great academic programs. The Penryn campus in Cornwall stood out to me because it offered a high-quality education in a beautiful and peaceful location. I also liked that Exeter focuses on practical learning, which gave me the chance to gain real-world experience and build the skills I needed for my career in law.
What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?
The skills and experiences that have been most useful for my career include the practical learning opportunities I had during my time at university, particularly in mock trials. These experiences pushed me to step outside my comfort zone, which helped me develop confidence, public speaking skills, and the ability to think on my feet. Navigating these challenges gave me a real taste of what it’s like to advocate in high-pressure situations, preparing me for the contentious nature of the legal field. Additionally, working as a paralegal has allowed me to strengthen my communication, problem-solving, and client-care skills—crucial tools for my future as a solicitor.
