Jamie Graham
Current Employer/Organisation Name
Costello Medical
What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?
I worked as a scientist for 2 years at GSK, in their microbiology team, developing antibody therapeutics for infectious diseases. I developed a passion for science communication in this time and wanted to work at a later stage of the drug development pipeline. So I left GSK for Costello Medical where I now work in the Value and Access Team as an Analyst. As part of this I take clinical trial and economic modelling data and draw out the key value messages associated with new medicines that are used to support their reimbursement in regulatory submissions and more.
Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?
I really enjoy science communication, presenting and strategic thinking, my role involves a lot of these aspects. It is also very impactful work, the work I do directly helps to get new drugs approved and available on the NHS for patients who need them!
Please tell us if you were a member of any societies, groups or sports clubs?
I was part of Expedition Society, badminton club, and BioSoc.
What did you enjoy most about your programme and what was the biggest highlight?
I really enjoyed the lab work, especially in my masters year where I was working on cutting edge research with bacteriophages for treating antibiotic resistant bacteria.
What did you most enjoy about studying here?
Really enjoyed my course and lab work. I also loved the location of Exeter, being so close to the coast and to Dartmoor, and had so many great day trips out!
Why did you choose to study at Exeter?
Great location and course that interested me. I also took part in the Exeter progression (now Exeter scholars) scheme during my A Levels, so I had good knowledge of the University already and felt like it was a great fit for me!
What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?
Science communication, excellent presentation and leadership skills. I think Exeter has helped me to be well rounded in my skill set.
What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?
Make the most of opportunities for internships and stuff like that the University offers! Also, definitely use the Career Zone. I found the Career Mentor Scheme particularly beneficial!
What are your plans for the future?
I would like to continue in my current industry and gain more experience. Long term I would like to work in reimbursement for a pharmaceutical company where I can have more of a strategic role!
