What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?
After graduating with both my BA and MA from the University of Exeter, I have been working at the UK’s premier defence trade association, ADS Group Ltd. I play a part in supporting and promoting the UK defence sector, working closely with industry leaders, government representatives and international partners.
Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?
When choosing a career, I was keen to continue my engagement with real life issues and current affairs which was fostered at the University of Exeter.
My role at ADS allows me the opportunity to interact with a wide spectrum of personnel, in particular providing tailored support to our member organisations, addressing their unique challenges and opportunities when engaging with front line command. This involves a lot of travel, networking and adaptability, blending the civilian and military cultures.
Please tell us if you were a member of any societies, groups or sports clubs?
I was part of the Politics Society 2019-23 (Careers and Alumni Officer 2022/23)
What did you enjoy most about your programme and what was the biggest highlight?
My MA gave me access to highly knowledgeable professors and allowed me to specialise in my preferred area with a huge amount of support. The placement at Peregrine RM was the ideal springboard to my future career.
What did you most enjoy about studying here?
The clear progression within the department from my BA to my MA was hugely influential when choosing to continue at Exeter. I enjoyed the enrichment opportunities provided by both the university and societies, and the campus is beautiful.
Why did you choose to study at Exeter?
Along with the obvious course appeal, the location played a huge part – the big Uni, small city combination close to the countryside and beach was ideal for someone who grew up in a rural area and wanted the benefits of a city close to green spaces!
What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?
Real life experience is essential for differentiating yourself from others – connect with professionals on LinkedIn, participate in enrichment opportunities and internships that you can talk about.
Exeter can help you with this, but increasingly I am asked about my independent work outside of the seminar room. Think about office based part-time employment instead of hospitality roles alongside your degree to provide a contrast in skill set.
What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?
Be tenacious and don’t be afraid to stand out for the right reasons. Business Development is all about forming connections and to do that, blending in will not help you!
Make sure to remember personal details about your connections, be personable and accommodating to change – MOD civil servants are more process driven than their military colleagues so a degree of adaptability is essential whilst remaining clear in your own company’s objectives.
What are your plans for the future?
I am hoping to progress within ADS, further specialising in strategic military engagement with a business development focus. In the future, I would look to move into the public sector once I have expanded my industry knowledge.
