Kate Belson
Current Employer/Organisation Name
Hatless Studios
What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?
Since leaving Exeter, I have acted as Head of Projects at Hatless Studios. I am responsible for client consulting, technical project management, and improving internal processes like training resources and recruitment.
Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy talking to people as well as technical development, so being able to work in a technical environment as well as being in a client-facing role really appealed to me, and getting to talk to different people is something I really enjoy.
Please tell us if you were a member of any societies, groups or sports clubs?
At Exeter, I was a member of the climbing society (acted as welfare officer 2021-22), swim society, benchball society, pole fitness society, and computing society (acted as publicity officer 2021-22).
What did you enjoy most about your programme and what was the biggest highlight?
My biggest highlight was my dissertation project – a breast cancer detection program, using convoluted neural networks to detect breast cancer from MRI scans. I particularly enjoyed the AI and nature-inspired computation modules.
What did you enjoy most about studying here?
I enjoyed being able to work on an interesting course in a campus environment.
Why did you choose to study at Exeter?
I chose to study at Exeter because I loved the campus and the homely feel. Also, I really liked the look of the course!
What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?
Soft skills are often overlooked, and are very important! Being able to talk to people, explain your work, and show enthusiasm for what you do are key areas to develop when starting your career.
What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?
Develop your passions! If something interests you, research it, complete a project, find out all you can. A recruiter will notice your enthusiasm and interest, and this will help you get a dream role.
What are your plans for the future?
I am looking to start a graduate scheme next September, and continue to work in technical project management in hopefully the space industry, or in medical computing.
