What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?

Upon graduating, I worked for one of the main political parties in their London and Cardiff HQs, followed by working as a researcher for a member of the National Assembly for Wales. I then went on to joining the Civil Service where I have worked across the Home Office, Cabinet Office, Foreign Office and Northern Ireland Office in private office, policy and strategy roles, including working for two cabinet ministers. I am still in the Civil Service where I head up the private office of the head of the UK’s Border Force – the second largest law enforcement organisation in England and Wales after the Met Police.

Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?

I joined the civil service as I have a strong interest in public service and improving and protecting the lives of citizens.  I enjoy supporting senior leaders in private office roles by having a helicopter view of the issues and challenges that need to be grappled with, developing strategic linkages and identifying solutions.

Please tell us if you were a member of any societies, groups or sports clubs?

I was a member of the Politics Society and the LGBT Society.

What did you enjoy most about your programme and what was the biggest highlight?

Broadening my understanding of different political theories, issues and systems whilst learning to appreciate alternative opinions in debate. A highlight was visiting Libya in early 2002 to understand the human rights and democracy challenges at the time.

What did you most enjoy about studying here?

My fellow students, some of whom are still close friends.

Why did you choose to study at Exeter?

Living in Wales, I wanted to go to university in England; Exeter was recommended to me by some of my tutors and lectures during GCSE and A-Level studies and I felt comfortable when in visit during an open day.

What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?

Listening, multitasking and written and verbal communication have been key. My knowledge and understanding of different political systems has also been  added bonus, especially when engaging with international partners.

What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?

Definitely get work experience in different environments to build contacts but also work out what career options are best for you.

What are your plans for the future?

To continue in the Civil Service whilst broadening my experience across government so I can contribute further to society through public service.
