What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?

Since graduating from Exeter in 2023, I secured my first job as a Project Coordinator in Hong Kong. In this role, I organised and delivered customised workshops for large groups of students, primarily focusing on IELTS preparation. Working with my team at the Centre for Independent Language Learning (CILL), I developed specialised classes to address students’ concerns in speaking, reading, writing, and listening, ensuring we met exam deadlines.

I collaborated with my colleagues to group students by ability using our calendar, which allowed us to tailor our teaching pace to their individual needs. I was responsible for creating personalised study plans in Word and Excel, which I then transferred to SharePoint to make them accessible to both my colleagues and students, particularly those with weaker English skills. Additionally, I built a strong and flexible network, both in-person and virtually, to support my team and students, with a focus on phonics and phonetic training.

Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?

I chose this career because I have always had a passion for education and deeply appreciate how it has shaped my own life. I hope to help others in their educational journeys as well. Additionally, I have a keen interest in Chinese culture and history, as well as the development of Hong Kong, which is why I enjoy being here. In my current role, the greatest joy comes from assisting students with their scholarship applications, as many aspire to pursue opportunities abroad. Being able to play a small part in making their dreams a reality makes my job truly rewarding.

What did you enjoy most about your programme and what was the biggest highlight?

I thoroughly enjoyed the diverse range of modules available, with my favourite being the New York field trip module. This experience allowed me to delve into various cultures and witness how they blend in the vibrant melting pot of New York City. Additionally, visiting sites like the Geevor Tin Mine in Cornwall enriched my education. My program provided the opportunity to explore unique locations while deepening my understanding of current affairs, learning about the histories of multiple nations and their development over time. Lastly, the caring and supportive nature of teachers and the ASK team were my biggest highlight in navigating the university system.

What did you most enjoy about studying here?

I appreciated the serene environment of studying in Cornwall, where I could finish a class and then head to the beach or take a road trip to picturesque locations like St Ives and Land’s End. Moreover, my experience at Exeter allowed me to participate in enjoyable and creative societies, enriching my time there even further.

Why did you choose to study at Exeter?

I chose to study at Exeter because, at the time of my application, it was ranked 7th in the country for Politics and was an established member of the Russell Group. I was particularly drawn to the extensive opportunities the university offered, including the chance to undertake fieldwork in New York. Additionally, studying at the Cornwall campus allowed me to explore the beautiful countryside, an experience I would not typically have had as someone who grew up in London.

What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?

I believe a key skill that will be invaluable in my career is the ability to be attentive and responsive to individuals’ needs, particularly in recognising and addressing issues that may not be immediately apparent. In my experience working with students, I’ve realised that they often struggle to articulate the help they require. It’s my responsibility to identify these needs and support them in achieving their goals.

What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?

I would encourage current students to actively seek and explore the diverse opportunities that teaching can offer. Beyond the classroom, there are many avenues to consider, such as going abroad or participating in teacher training programs. It’s important to recognise that teaching encompasses various ways to support and uplift students, allowing for a rich and fulfilling career.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans for the future are currently pursuing my PGCE in history and I hope to start my own education company.

My favourite part of the degree programme was the seminar lessons where we could discuss the uses of technology for educational purposes, listening and learning from very diverse points of view was interesting and inspiring.
