What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?

After leaving Exeter, I started in my first post-university role as a Talent Coordinator at a recruitment company close to home, posting job specifications to job boards, pre-screening applicants over the phone and arranging interviews. Part of this role also included overseeing the company’s social media accounts and auditing the website they were building, which I enjoyed the most. After communicating this to my management, I then developed into a Marketing Assistant role. After a year in that company, I decided to apply for a Digital Marketing Assistant role at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London and was successful. Last year, I was then promoted to Digital Marketing Coordinator, working across social media, web, email and a range of digital media campaigns.

Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?

I have always loved being able to combine creativity and logical thinking, which definitely pertained to my degree. The digital landscape is constantly changing, and it’s really important to remain on the pulse with cultural moments to ensure what I’m sharing is strengthened by it’s relevancy in wider communities. It’s really fun to be able to tap into these and create a real ‘moment in time’. I’m also very lucky to be in a team which values being at the forefront of what we do, so I’m able to try new things and put new ideas forward.

Please tell us if you were a member of any societies, groups or sports clubs?

I started as the Online Lifestyle Editor for the Exeposé and later became the Online Senior Editor. This was really helpful for my career now, as it allowed me to navigate the CMS (WordPress), which is actually used for our current Studio Tour website.

What did you enjoy most about your programme and what was the biggest highlight?

I really enjoyed the combination of independent and group study. It was great to have the opportunity to form my own ideas and then use seminars to engage in discussion and bounce ideas off each other. My course really encouraged me to think creatively and outside of the box. My highlight was for my Charles Dickens module in third year when we were given the task to introduce Dickens’ text to a modern audience in a new way. My group decided to design an escape room from start to end, and even created a social media page to promote it. Not what I imagined doing when I started the module, but a really fun task to be given!

What did you most enjoy about studying here?

I really loved being able to explore the beautiful campus and surrounding areas with the friends I had met at university. I had moved around 3.5 hours away from home, so when I first started university I was really nervous about not knowing anyone. I was really lucky to make lifelong friends, who I have still remained in contact with now.

Why did you choose to study at Exeter?

I really wanted to gain some independence and experience living away from home. When I visited Exeter during the open day, everyone was really friendly and the campus was lovely. Exeter also has a great reputation as a Russell Group university, and offered a range of resources for my study (including the collection of Archived content, accessible for my degree).

What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?

My degree has allowed me to think outside of the box whilst still applying logic, but it has also helped me to develop my soft skills, including organisation, time management and collaboration. My time spent supporting the Exeposé also allowed me to gain experience using a CMS for the first time – knowledge which I now use in my current job.

What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?

Definitely commit time to staying up-to-date with current moments and cultural trends. Look at what other brands are doing to ensure you’re remaining on the pulse. Take every opportunity that’s given to you, but also make your own opportunities, whether that’s starting a personal blog or making sure you’re using social media to its full potential.

What are your plans for the future?

I’m looking to develop in my current role, engaging with new technologies and trends whilst taking on more responsibility. I want to continue leading with creativity and support with the company being at the forefront of new and exciting projects.
