What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?

I started an internship at the University of Cape Town in October 2024, right after completing my master’s degree, as part of the Oppenheimer Programme for African Landscapes scholarship. During this internship, I am focusing on communicating climate hazards to support urban planning in Maputo, particularly in relation to sea level rise and cyclones. In parallel, I am also working with Centro Terra Viva on marine ecosystem conservation.

Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?

I have a deep love for nature, which began with my studies in marine, aquatic, and coastal biology. Adding the climate hazards perspective has been crucial for me, especially in supporting the conservation and protection of marine ecosystems that are increasingly impacted by climate change. It’s essential not only to focus on protecting these ecosystems and their resources but also to consider who depends on them. This internship has been particularly valuable in helping me integrate the social dimension of conservation — learning how to protect both the ecosystems and the communities that rely on them.

What did you enjoy most about your programme and what was the biggest highlight?

The experience of stepping outside my comfort zone, being exposed to new teaching methods, and deepening my knowledge about climate change was incredibly valuable. The biggest highlight was undoubtedly completing the programme, despite facing significant personal challenges and not always being in a stable mental state.

What did you most enjoy about studying here?

The university is beautiful, with everything well-organized and running smoothly. Most of the lecturers were excellent, and I was fortunate to make some great friends during my time there.

Why did you choose to study at Exeter?

It was the best option, especially when it comes to the climate change subject I was focusing on.

What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?

The deep understanding of climate change and for sure systems thinking (Thanks James).

What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?

Be brave, we have a lot to do, especially in Africa.

What are your plans for the future?

To work in sustainable conservation, making a serious impact on communities and marine and coastal ecosystems.
