My journey to Exeter and why I chose MA Education

Choosing the University of Exeter for my MA in Education was a decision driven by a deep-seated passion for education and a desire to make a meaningful impact in the field. With a background in teaching, I was looking for a program that not only provided a strong theoretical foundation but also offered practical insights into the challenges and opportunities within the education sector. Exeter’s MA in Education stood out to me because of its reputation for academic excellence, the expertise of its faculty, and its commitment to research-driven education.

The University’s beautiful campus, combined with its strong sense of community, made it an ideal environment for both personal and professional growth. I was particularly drawn to Exeter’s focus on leading and managing educational change which aligned perfectly with my career aspirations.

What impressed me most about the course

One of the most impressive aspects of the MA Education program at Exeter was the breadth and depth of the curriculum. The course offered a diverse range of modules, allowing me to tailor my studies to my specific interests. Whether it was delving into the complexities of educational policy or exploring innovative teaching methodologies, each module provided valuable insights and challenged me to think critically about the role of education in society.

The faculty at Exeter were exceptional—not only in their academic expertise but also in their dedication to student development. Their support and guidance were instrumental in helping me navigate the complexities of the course and develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

Overcoming challenges

Like any rigorous academic program, the MA Education at Exeter presented its own set of challenges. Balancing the demands of coursework with my job as Deputy Headteacher required strong time management and resilience. However, these challenges also became some of the most rewarding aspects of my experience, as they pushed me to develop new skills and a greater sense of self-efficacy.

Support from Exeter’s Career Zone and Mentorship

The careers and employability support at Exeter were invaluable during my time as a student. The Career Zone provided resources that helped me refine my CV, prepare for interviews, and explore various career paths within education. Additionally, the mentorship scheme connected me with experienced professionals in the field, offering insights and advice that were crucial as I began to shape my career pathway to headship.

What surprised me about studying at Exeter

One pleasant surprise during my time at Exeter was the strong sense of community among students and faculty alike. Despite the program’s academic rigor, there was always a collaborative spirit that made learning a shared experience rather than a solitary endeavor. The friendships and professional connections I made during my time at Exeter have been one of the most enduring aspects of my experience, continuing to provide support and opportunities long after graduation.

Advice for prospective students

To anyone considering studying at Exeter, I would say this: Embrace the experience fully. The MA Education program is not just about acquiring knowledge; it’s about becoming part of a vibrant educational community that will challenge and support you every step of the way. Take advantage of the resources available, engage with your peers and professors, and most importantly, stay open to the unexpected opportunities that will undoubtedly arise.

Choosing Exeter was one of the best decisions I made for my personal and professional growth, and I am confident it can be for you as well.

I have been a teacher for the past 20 years, having graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2001, then traveled the world, and worked at KPMG in Birmingham for 3 years. I started my teaching career at Adams’ Grammar School in Shropshire, where steadily worked up the pastoral ladder for 10 years. My wife and I then decided to work Internationally, and obtained jobs in Taiwan, where we worked for 6 years. I was a PE teacher and Head of Year 8, and she was Head of Year 1. After 6 years, including the global pandemic, we moved to Malaysia, where we currently reside at a brand new school, called Stonyhurst, where we joined as founding members two years ago. Between our final year in Taiwan, and our first year in Malaysia, we did our Masters qualifications, which mine was from Exeter University!
