What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?

After I finished my undergraduate in 2021, I went straight into the – now defunct – LPC which I finished in 2022. I started my TC in September 2022 and qualified in September 2024. During my TC I spent time dealing with magistrates’ court work, homicide, and serious sexual offences. I also did a stint advising the Attorney and Solicitor General on sentencing, among other things. Upon qualification I was appointed as a Crown Prosecutor in London which is an advocate in the magistrates’ court conducting trials and hearings. In April 2024 I was promoted to ‘Senior Crown Prosecutor’. As a SCP, I consider evidence and charge all types of offences. I’m currently based in the out-of-hours team racing against the PACE clock and charging cases where suspects are in custody (think ‘24 Hours in Police Custody’).

Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?

I find crime incredibly interesting; it is inherently sociological and no two matters are identical. At the core of everything there are people: victims, witnesses, and suspects. All of whom deserve the best of our Criminal Justice System. Despite the allure of shiny areas of law, the criminal law is probably the area you’ll encounter the most day-to-day.

At the risk of sounding cliché, getting just outcomes is what I most enjoy. While I cannot undo the crime, I can help justice being seen to be done.

What did you most enjoy about studying here?

That everything is a walkable distance, trees, and the people. Most of my best friends were made at Exeter.

Why did you choose to study at Exeter?

Pathways to Law introduced me to Exeter and it was the closest Russell Group University to St.Ives (where I grew up).

What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?

Communication, both oral and written.

Analytic thinking.

Legal research (which I only really got a hang of well into my TC)

A well-rounded experience of working alongside study was hugely beneficial in developing soft skills.

What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?

Understand your motivation and if it is for you, go for it. Consider Criminal Defence- to have a fair system, we need competent people on both sides.

Feel free to get in touch.

What are your plans for the future?

Apply for a part-time judicial post once I have the requisite 5 years PQE, become more well rounded in Public and Coronial law and lecture in Criminal Law part-time (*nudge nudge*).
