What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?
I was elected as the first Green Party MP in 2010, and served until I stood down in 2024. Before that, I was a Member of the European Parliament for 10 years, and prior to that, I worked for Oxfam, first as a press officer, then as a policy adviser, and finally head of Trade Policy.
Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?
I passionately believe that social and environmental justice should be at the heart of politics. Being an MP is an extraordinary privilege. If you want to change things, it’s a great place to start.
What did you enjoy most about your programme and what was the biggest highlight?
The tutors were absolutely brilliant – I remember in particular Dr Gareth Roberts and Professor Gamini Salgado – it’s not too much to say they changed my life.
What did you most enjoy about studying here?
The people I met.
Why did you choose to study at Exeter?
To be honest, because of its proximity to the sea 🙂
What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?
English Literature widens your imagination and teaches you to tell stories – both are vital in the world today.
What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?
Do it! And don’t be put off by others who say it’s not possible.
What are your plans for the future?
My most recent book, Another England, was published in 2024 – I’m now currently writing a new book on populism, as well as working as a Professor of Practice in Environmental Sustainability at the University of Sussex.
