What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?

After graduation, I moved to Taiwan to teach English as a Second Language. I spent a year living there before travelling in Asia. Afterwards, I volunteered for Angloville in Poland teaching conversational English to Polish business professionals. I started my travel blog charlieontravel.com at this time and began looking for a remote working job to sustain my writing and travelling. I came to work in the Content Marketing department of a digital marketing company called Exposure Ninja (http://exposureninja.com). This was a remote working role which involved writing articles and blogs. After six months, I was promoted to Head of the Content Marketing department and I grew the team from just 2 writers to 20 writers and to be the most profitable department in the company. In 2017, I was promoted again and became the Chief Operations Officer for Exposure Ninja. My work now involves overseeing the daily operations of the company, working to improve profitability and work-flow for the team through efficient processes, tasking and workload management. I work full-time in my role as COO and continue to run my travel blog as a side project.

Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?

What I love most about my work is seeing results. Our company’s work focuses on improving the visibility of websites online and helping them to get more customers. I love working across teams to build strategies that work and seeing our clients rise to success.

What did you enjoy most about studying here?

I enjoyed studying at Exeter because I met many new and inspiring people, both students and lecturers. I always felt the campus was tight-knit and felt supported by my peers and my tutors to achieve more and I did.

Why did you choose to study at Exeter?

I chose to study at Exeter because of its high position on the UK university league tables. I was keen to attend one of the best universities in the country for studying English.

What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?

The most useful skills and experiences for my career have been clear communication (writing and speaking), hard work, dedication and determination.

What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?

Find an entry-route into the industry and go from there. Once you have a way in, you’ll be able to work your way up through hard work, dedication and self-learning. There are many resources online to learn about digital marketing, so I would recommend reading around these and seeing what peaks your interest.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans for the future are to continue working for Exposure Ninja and growing the business. I love my job as COO and I want to push further and achieve more in this role.
