What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?

Opera singer and stage director/designer.

Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?

It might be fair to say that it chose me.

Please tell us if you were a member of any societies, groups or sports clubs?

Gilbert and Sullivan.

What did you enjoy most about your programme and what was the biggest highlight?

Nothing stands out – it was all good. We didn’t have programmes. We did courses of study!

What did you enjoy most about studying here?

Relaxed, mostly supportive and kindly staff, sensible student colleagues, city life without the pressures of London or other big cities.

Why did you choose to study at Exeter?

I have Devonian blood and it seemed a good idea to spend a few years in the county.

What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?

Patience, attention to detail, perseverance. Things rarely happen by chance!

What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?

Plan and then try to follow your own guidelines.

What are your plans for the future?

Mostly retired from opera, and Covid doesn’t help, but whatever comes along. Old opera singers don’t retire, they just keep droning on, hopefully in time with the orchestra.
