What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?

I’ve been to Exeter twice! Or three times. A degree in Biological Sciences in 2011-14, followed by an masters by research looking at the impacts of climate change on marine mussels. I then worked with the Army for a while before coming back to Exeter for a Medical degree in 2018. Since graduating in 2023 I have been working as a Resident Doctor at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital.

Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?

I chose this career as I wanted to be constantly learning and working in a role where I can make a real difference to the people in my community. Entering a bit later, having worked several other jobs, helped me to know that I wanted something a bit more than just a job. I love being constantly challenged, at times stressed, learning all the time and meeting all sorts of wildly different people from our community.

Please tell us if you were a member of any societies, groups or sports clubs?

What did you enjoy most about your programme and what was the biggest highlight?

A modern programme using modern teaching methods with good self directed learning and a focus on placement training early on. Lots of group work and problem based learning.

What did you most enjoy about studying here?

The city of Exeter and the county of Devon. It is a wonderful place to be. Every day we could go out to explore a new village, woodland, beach, while Exeter also has everything you want in a city.

Why did you choose to study at Exeter?

I had a great experience here during my first degree and was delighted to have the opportunity to come back. Being able to link back in with the societies I had previously been involved with and help out was also a big draw.

What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?

Work ethic, organisation skill, determination and drive alongside the career specific skills taught during the degree. The most important of these were arguably developed by holding key roles in student societies.

What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?

For medicine it is fine to do something else before! Getting in to medicine is very difficult and it is very competitive. Coming back as an adult with life experience and developed skills was very helpful. I do not at all think my first degree was a waste, rather the experience of that helped to set me up to be ready for my medical degree.

What are your plans for the future?

I hope to specialise in Emergency Medicine and continue working in Exeter. I now have a wife and two energetic spaniels, and this is such a great place to live our lives.
