What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?

After graduating, I spent several years in Amman, Jordan, working for a legal NGO implementing programs within the legal sector. I completed my law conversion at City Law School, University of London, followed by an LLM in International Law at the Fletcher School at Tufts University. During my LLM, I researched the extraterritorial application of U.S. law in the context of financial crime enforcement, which led me to begin my career in compliance at HSBC in New York. I joined Goldman Sachs in 2020 and currently oversee the Sanctions Risk and Advisory function within Financial Crime Compliance.

Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?

I chose a career in sanctions compliance because it sits at the intersection of law, geopolitics, and the global financial system. My job allows me to leverage my background in politics and law, while analysing real-time issues shaped by international relations and state behaviour. Sanctions are uniquely connected to real-time global events, making it both intellectually rigorous and highly relevant to the evolving geopolitical landscape.

My study abroad in Damascus, Syria & my classes with Dr Lise Storm.

Why did you choose to study at Exeter?

The combination of great politics and Arabic departments, and the ability to study abroad.
