Can you give us an overview of what you have done since you completed your research degree?

I have worked as a parish priest, on a bishop’s staff and now on our denominational staff. I have been involved in training clergy, church administration in various areas, governance, liturgy and data collection.

How did you become interested in the area you work in?

I have had wonderful mentors who helped me to have a wide variety of experiences in leadership.

How did you find opportunities in the area you work in and how did the recruitment process work?

I found opportunities through mentors and through public postings.

What does your current role involve?

Church governance and administration; supervision of staff; data collection and analysis; presentations; meeting planning; language services; leadership development.

What skills are involved in your work and how did your research degree help develop them?

Administration, time management, planning, analysis and theological reflection.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

The variety in each day and the wonderful people with whom I work.

What are the challenges in your role?

Balancing complexities; working with a variety of different types of people; and taking care of myself.

What has surprised you about your role?

How much fun it can be.

Did you engage in any additional activities or roles (i.e. organising conferences, entering PGR showcase, being a PGR Rep etc.) during your research degree, and how did these help prepare you for a career beyond academia?

I did not.

What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?

Mentoring, coaching, volunteer, opportunities, a willingness to keep learning.

What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?

Pursue your passion and find wonderful mentors.

What are your plans for the future?

Continuing to grow in leadership and responsibility.
