What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?
I left Exeter in 2023 and started a graduate role in social value at Kier Construction. That involved working with the business to achieve requirements for added value within communities. Since then, I have transitioned to business development but still within the construction industry. What I do now includes supporting the business to find projects and win more work, maintaining and creating relationships to support work winning, and tracking a pipeline of work.
Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?
The career found me more than anything, I’ve landed where I am largely by the connections I have made along the way. My role is so varied that every day is different. It also involves a lot of personal interaction, which I greatly enjoy. It includes being very agile and outgoing and is, therefore, well suited to my personality.
What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?
Thus far in my career I have found soft skills to be far more important than technical ones. These include communication, time keeping, organisation, and working as part of a team. I’ve found employers are likely to seek these skills in their employees and they are important in any role.
What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?
Talk to everyone you can all the time, you never know how they might be able to help you in the future.
What are your plans for the future?
Since I never planned on this career, I think it wise to not plan too far ahead. There could be roles I don’t know exist yet!
