Can you give us an overview of what you have done since you completed your research degree?
After graduation I spent some time working on various projects with Lancaster University and Bristol University, as a Postdoc and later in a self-employed capacity. Since 2024, I have a full time job as the technical manager for a publishing service that supports psychology-related research at a German government-funded Psychology Institute.
How did you become interested in the area you work in?
I was always interested in Psychology but my background was technical. Being able to combine both worlds makes me happy.
How did you find opportunities in the area you work in and how did the recruitment process work?
Word of mouth really.
What does your current role involve?
Managing the technical aspects of 14 academic online journals.
What skills are involved in your work and how did your research degree help develop them?
Being able to understand the contents of the articles published in our journals helps a lot in the day to day running and management of the journals.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
The diversity of the tasks involved. Being able to decide myself what’s important right now.
Why are the challenges in your role?
Government funding that’s not permanent.
What has surprised you about your role?
That some people don’t see the good in open science.
What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?
Being wrong and teaching myself new skills.
What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?
Don’t give up… perseverence is the key to it all.
