Can you give us an overview of what you have done since you completed your research degree?
Opened new law firm as sole practitioner after selling my previous firm to DWF PLC.
How did you become interested in the area you work in?
First seat of articles in 1985.
How did you find opportunities in the area you work in and how did the recruitment process work?
I applied to a large number of law firms for my articles and had a good interview leading to my first job. As i became more experienced it became easier to move around.
What does your current role involve?
Running own law firm specialising in aviation insurance law and claims.
What skills are involved in your work and how did your research degree help develop them?
PhD has given me a further level of credibility as a lawyer in a competitive field.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I get involved in technical disputes and I enjoy the challenge of learning about and understanding the technology.
What are the challenges in your role?
Dealing with modern law firm employees who appear to be process data input managers than lawyers.
What has surprised you about your role?
Not much.
What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?
Hard work.
What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?
Work hard.
What are your plans for the future?
Manage my time between work and hobbies. Possibly write a textbook.
