What have you been doing since leaving Exeter, and what are you doing now?
Since graduating from the University of Exeter in 2024 with an LLB, I completed the Legal Practice Course and Master of Laws at the University of Law’s Exeter campus. I am now a Trainee Solicitor at Stephens Scown LLP, having started my training contract in September 2025. I am currently in my first seat within the Real Estate – Development team, where I assist with development agreements, option agreements, land acquisitions, due diligence reviews, and the drafting and negotiation documents.
Why did you choose this career? And what do you enjoy most about your work?
I chose a career in law because I was drawn to its intellectual challenge, the problem‑solving involved, and the opportunity to work closely with clients on matters that have real commercial impact. I wanted a profession that would continually challenge me and enable me to develop both analytical and interpersonal skills. What I enjoy most about my work is the combination of legal and commercial reasoning, the variety of matters I am involved in, and the opportunity to work within a supportive team. The firm’s culture and the people I work with are a central part of what makes the role so rewarding.
Please tell us if you were a member of any societies, groups or sports clubs?
I was part of Law society and Polo society.
What did you enjoy most about your programme and what was the biggest highlight?
I most enjoyed the academic quality of the LLB programme at Exeter, particularly the high standard of teaching, the intellectually challenging modules, and the supportive law school community. The breadth of optional modules and the strong academic environment helped develop my legal reasoning skills and shaped my interest in practice. The standout highlight of my degree was participating in the Law Clinic module, which offered a unique opportunity to apply legal principles in a practical setting and strengthened the skills that underpin my work today.
What did you most enjoy about studying here?
What I enjoyed most about studying at Exeter was the combination of a strong academic environment and an excellent wider student experience. The Law School offered high‑quality teaching, supportive staff, and intellectually engaging modules, which collectively shaped my interest in practice and developed my analytical skills. Outside the classroom, the campus setting, facilities, and student community created a positive and motivating environment in which to study and develop personally. The balance between academic study and a supportive, well‑resourced university experience made Exeter an exceptional place to study law.
Why did you choose to study at Exeter?
I chose the University of Exeter because it offered the right balance between academic reputation and quality of life. Coming from Yorkshire, I wanted to study in a city environment while also having access to a distinctive landscape, and Exeter provided both. The combination of a well‑regarded Russell Group institution and the unique setting of Devon made Exeter an ideal place to pursue a degree.
What skills and experiences have been most useful for your career?
My degree gave me strong analytical, research, and problem‑solving skills, all of which I use daily as a trainee solicitor. The experience of applying legal principles, particularly through the Law Clinic, has been directly relevant to drafting, reviewing documents, and working with clients.
What advice would you give to a current student who wishes to pursue your career?
My advice to current students is to persevere and stay focused, even when the path to qualification feels competitive. Gaining experience early – whether through vacation schemes, pro bono work, or part‑time roles – makes a significant difference. Make full use of the Law School’s careers support and resources, and don’t be discouraged by setbacks. With persistence and the right opportunities, it is entirely achievable to secure a role in the profession.
